More than 50 employees of a senior citizen facility near Melbourne, Australia, will share in a $1.44 million lottery prize.
Cooks, cleaners and managers at Park Lane Residential Aged Care in Croydon North, a Melbourne suburb, each contributed about $1.50 to purchase an entry in Saturday's TattsLotto weekly contest. After six numbers, and two supplemental numbers, were drawn, the syndicate of 51 people won a "Division One" prize of $1.44 million, with each receiving $28,072.
"The winning ticket belongs to a syndicate I run for my workplace in the big draws and there are 51 people in it. So I didn't sleep at all thinking about breaking the news to everyone," the unidentified organizer of the winning group said Sunday. "Everyone's been so excited today! It works out to be roughly a bit over $37,000 (USD$28,072) each, which we are all extremely grateful for -- we've got nothing to complain about. A lot of people have said, 'You don't know how much this has helped me.' Some people plan to buy a new car, put some towards their mortgages and take some holidays."
Saturday's draw yielded 21 winning tickets to split a $15.75 million jackpot.
Cheng En, owner of the store where the group's winning ticket was purchased, commented, "I understand aged care work can have some pretty hard-working conditions so I hope this win brings a lot of happiness to the dedicated workers in the winning syndicate."
About half the staff of the facility were participants in the group purchase of the winning ticket.
