The Denver Broncos placed nine-time Pro Bowl linebacker DeMarcus Ware on the Injured Reserve list on Wednesday because of a back injury.
Ware missed five games because of a broken forearm earlier this season and finished the campaign with 15 tackles, including four sacks, in 10 games.
"DeMarcus' back is bothering him," coach Gary Kubiak said on Wednesday. "We'll have him looked at right here and we'll have to make a decision at some point.
"There are some things that he's been playing through that are bothering him a little bit more than normal right now."
The 34-year-old Ware, who is not under contract for the 2017 season, has made 657 tackles and 138.5 sacks in 12 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys and Broncos.
Ware is one sack behind Jason Taylor and three in back of Hall of Famer Michael Strahan for sixth place on the NFL's all-time list.
Denver also placed cornerback Kayvon Webster on injured reserve.
The 25-year-old Webster had four tackles and a pass deflection in 13 games this season.
Also on Wednesday, the Broncos activated cornerback Taurean Nixon and nose tackle Kyle Peko to their active roster, and signed offensive lineman Reese Dismukes, defensive lineman Iosia Iosia and wide receiver Hunter Sharpe to their practice squad.
