Is your Sophie the Giraffe toy full of mould?

As far as I can tell, guilt and parenting seem to go together hand in hand.
Whether it’s your toddler falling over, or not spending enough time with them because you’re stuck at the office, there’s always something to feel bad about.
But the good news is, you can feel save yourself a guilt trip if you never bought your child the super popular Sophie the Giraffe toy. Why? Because Sophie the Giraffe is a very cute, but potentially unsanitary, breeding ground for mould.
Just like when we discovered the mouldy Tommy Tippee Cups, parents have been extremely worried, and have been sharing pictures of their snipped open Sophies, to shed light on just how much black mould can grow inside the toy that your child loves wrapping its gums around.

So what’s wrong with Sophie?
Basically, either a drooly baby is getting spit inside Sophie, or diligent parents who are washing the toy are leaving her insides wet. Either way, the nice warm damp space becomes the perfect environment for mould to florish.
Sophie’s amazon reviews reveal that this isn’t an uncommon occurrence.

Stephanie Oprea posted saying ‘Beware!! If you have a drooly baby, moisture will get into the hole and you’ll end up with mold! We’ve had ours for two years and the entire inside is coated with black mold.’
That said, Valarie Williams who writes for Scary Mommy, makes a great point, refusing to be freaked out by the fact that Sophie has a propensity to get mouldy.
Valarie writes: ‘It’s shocking and disgusting, but again, shouldn’t come as a huge surprise… … it’s not Sophie’s fault she gets moldy. She just needs a proper cleaning, like any other plastic or rubber toy with a hole in it that your baby regularly gums on.’
Valarie suggests either using vinegar and water, putting the toy through the dishwasher, or washing her in boiling water. So you might not need to give Sophie a new home at the bin quite yet.
Sophie the Giraffe UK told us: ’70 million Sophie toys have been sold over 55 years, so it has one of the longest child safety records of any toy on the market. I’ve been running the UK and Ireland distribution for Sophie for ten years and I’m yet to see one single toy be returned with any mould issues.’
