After backlash, Instagram says 'swipe-left' change accidental

A new swipe-left scrolling feature appeared on Instagram Thursday, but the company said it was a mistake and rolled back the change after backlash from users online.

The update changed how users click through posts, from the up-down swipe to a left-right version, similar to the way users tap through stories going sideways.

While the stories feature has been successful, the change to the swiping feature for posts upset users.

As users began to see the change Thursday, some voiced grievances on Twitter and created the hashtag #instagramfail.

"All I want for Christmas is my old Instagram back!" user Doug McDonald tweeted.

YouTube celebrity Elle Mills complained that the change made the photo and video sharing social network similar to the dating app Tinder.

"If I wanted tinder, I would have downloaded tinder," she wrote.

Instagram spokeswoman Paige Cohen said in an emailed statement to UPI the change resulted from a bug.

"Due to a bug, some users saw a change to the way their feed appears today," Cohen said. "We quickly fixed the issue and feed is back to normal. We apologize for any confusion."
